Coming of Age-Oct. 14, 09

Remember when you were a kid, coming of age, and required to read a book then write a report about it? You read the story, constructed your brilliant thoughts, underlined the title in blood red ink, “The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank” then you wrote your name directly on the cover before your hand smacked down the staple gun.

When I was 12 this then ‘worldly girl’ was given a ‘Coming of Age’ assignment. I entitled it, “My Mother’s Darling.” Seriously, my sister Eileen covered her smile every time she recounted the task because she couldn’t conceive I would actually give my composition that title. I think she thought my deductions about “My Mother’s Darling” reflected the similar mind-set of the gospel writer, St. John, who wrote that he was the one Jesus loved the most.

Well, who knows who mother’s favorite was then or now? Does it matter? I’m not sure but if I had to guess I think the lucky kids all feel that they were.
